Q. Should I have a receiving line at my wedding? If I don't, what will people think?
A. First off, you do not HAVE to have a receiving line. The importance of having a receiving line in the first place is for the bride and groom to greet every single one of their guests at some point, but it does not have to be in a formal receiving line. The bride and groom can greet their guests at the reception during the meal. Go around to each table and great your guests, and thank them all for coming. Some couples will do this when they pass out wedding cake, but be wary if you have a large number of guests. This can tend to take up more time and your guests will become impatient as they are waiting for the dance to begin. It is best to do this during the meal and in between speeches so something is always going on. This will help the flow of the event.
If you do decide to have a receiving line, the bride and groom, and their parents, should be apart of the line, and the Maid of Honour or Best Man is optional. This can be done immediately after the ceremony as the guests leave. You can also have the receiving line at the reception prior to your guests entering the venue. Be sure to have cocktails or hor's d'eouvres for any guest that are waiting in line.
